미국에 입국한 지 벌써 열흘이 지났다. 그 짧은 기간에 연구소 OT를 진행하고 있고, 어찌어찌 떠안은

논문 작성도 시작하고 있다. 개인적으로는 집 (아파트먼트) 계약을 했고, 유틸리티 설치비 납입증명서가 생겼으며, 이 주소지 증명을 기반으로 소셜 넘버(SSN)을 신청할 수 있게 되었다.

소셜 넘버가 없어도 미국에서 사는것에 지장은 없어보이는데, 단지 월급을 받으려면 소셜넘버가 필수다. 한국과 다르게 미국에서는 2주 단위로 주급을 주고, 내가 다니는 연구소에서는 2주마다 목요일(원래 오늘이다)에 월급을 준다. 이 시점에 내가 SSN을 신청한다는 것은, 이번 월급이 다음으로 이월된다는 것이고, 그건 자연스레 내가 지금 한국에서 킵해둔 돈으로 버티고 있다는 것이다. 고달프다.

J-1의 소셜 넘버 신청은 소속된 연구소의 행정반에서 J-1 SEVIS에 입국/근무 확정을 해주면 다음 날 인터넷으로 할 수 있다고 한다. 소셜넘버 신청 페이지 에서 우측의 "Start" 버튼을 누르면 시작할 수 있다.

18세 이상인지 (O), 미국 시민인지 (X), 그리고 주소가 있는지 (O)를 물어보는데, 아마 18세 이상이고 주소만 있으면 신청이 가능한 것 같다. 그리고 아래 안내문이 나온다.

국가선택이 조금 흥미로웠는데, 4가지의 한국이 존재한다: 광복 이전의 한국, 1976년부터의 북한 (조선민주주의인민공화국), 1976년 이전의 북한, 그리고 광복 이후의 남한. 북한이 저렇게 이름이 변경된 이력이 있는건 몰랐네.

이후에 이름 (부모님 포함), 주소지/연락처, 인종 등을 입력해야 한다. 그러면 끝! ... 인데, 결국 이거 가지고 바로 가야하는구나. 난 또 온라인으로 하면 안가도 되는줄알았네.
